ENTRY 8: MAXIMUM ACTION
It's been a minute, hasn't it? I've just played a game and i have some feelings about it.

Maximum Action is a 'John Woo' style first person movement shooter, where you duck, dodge, roll, bullet time, kick, and all sorts of well combined, snappy movement tech. of all the games which aim to recreate Woo's frenetic gun-fu action movie chic, be it Hong Kong Massacre, or Beyond Citadel, this one achieves it the best. The game grants you unlimited bullet time, a slew of easy to pick up and refreshing to use movement tech which combines and mixes and matches no matter how you use it. Mandell knows what he's doing with regards to mechanics, and the technical complexity on display is clear and polished to the extreme. I have small gripes with regards to how things like dropping weapons is handled (it uses a First In, First Out stack of just your two weapons) but these are nitpicks which largely don't detract from the experience. I have never seen a game so successfully communicate a backflip in a way that doesn't disorient the player.

What does detract from the experience, is the bugs. Corpses very frequently twitch and vibrate in place, or enter a stiff sitting position, or clip through the walls, jittering and tweaking their way into the void. The level design in the jungle level is blocky and full of holes into the void, and z fighting is a frequent problem throughout all of the level's geometry. Doors have their own slew of issues.
Tanks are a bitch to actually pilot. I've spent 10 minutes, climbing up them, crouching to try and get in, and the game flinging me back out onto the forest floor.
It's just lacking in polish. Which is okay for an early access game in alpha!! But to me, its not worth the twenty dollar price tag in its current state. I'd like to see this game reach a finished state, and if it did, i feel it could easily compete with the likes of ULTRAKILL. This is a game to watch, wishlist, and buy when it's done, but not yet. I'm happy to see it's recieving consistent updates and I'm excited to play it when it's done!!!
